Kelly from the Austin Humane Society sent me this heads up on Holiday Safety Tips for Pets. Plus, starting tomorrow it's the $5 Days of Christmas. Adoptions will be $5!
Simple Safety Tips for Pet Owners this Holiday Season
The Austin Humane Society would like to remind pet owners of potential dangers that exist in homes during the winter holidays. Follow these simple steps to help keep animals safe:
Keep holiday treats out of reach. Chocolate can be dangerous for dogs and cats, and candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause problems. If yoususpect your pet has ingested something toxic, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
Secure the Christmas tree. No matter the size, trees are a tipping hazard, especially when cats and dogs try to reach shiny ornaments and bright lights.
Tie down the tinsel. Secure tinsel out of reach of paws and claws. Cats especially like to play with tinsel. If swallowed, it can cause vomiting or diarrhea – and may require emergency surgery.
Watch for electrical hazards. Holiday lights and other decorations should be kept away from pets. If chewed on, your petmight suffer cuts, burns, or life-threatening shock.
Be careful with candles. Pets can burn their snouts and paws, or easily knock them over and start a fire.
Opt for plastic plants. When ingested, holiday plants like holly and mistletoe can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Choose plastic versions of your favorite holiday plants.
Don’t forget the ID. Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If your pet escapes and becomes lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip can be a lifesaver.
To celebrate the winter holidays, AHS is kicking off a “$5 Days of Christmas” promotion this Friday, December 20.Adoption fees are $5 for all animals at the shelter, and those currently living in foster care. Potential adopters will go through the standard adoption application process. Adoptions include spay/neuter surgery, updated vaccinations, a microchip, and a collar and tags.
